Meeting and lecture transcription, inspired by Otter.ai and OpenAI's Whisper API: audio uploaded to object storage, cut into chunks at silences and transcribed in parallel on GPU workers, stitched back together with speaker labels, and made searchable. A teaching design.

Functional requirements

  • Users upload audio or video recordings up to several hours long.
  • Users get a transcript with speaker labels and timestamps.
  • Users see progress while a recording is being transcribed.
  • Users search across all their transcripts and jump to the moment something was said.

Non-functional requirements

  • Uploads, progress and transcript views: p99 < 300 ms.
  • A one-hour recording is transcribed in under five minutes.
  • Scale: 5M daily users, 2K requests/s at peak.
  • Recordings and transcripts are private to their owner and never lost.
  • Availability: 99.9%.
